Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic is the Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Professor of Medical Sciences at Columbia University, and faculty in the Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Center for Human Development. She directs the Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering with 35 investigators. She serves on numerous editorial boards, scientific advisory boards and councils. The focus of her research is on engineering functional human tissues for regenerative medicine, basic research and study of disease. She is one of the 1,360 most highly cited scientists of all times (h>100). She has 75 licensed, issued or pending patents and has founded with her students three biotech companies: epiBone (http://epibone.com), Tara (http://tarabiosystems.com), and MatriTek (www.matritek.com). Among her recognitions, she was elected to the Academia Europea, AAAS, AIMBE, National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, and National Academy of Inventors.
